I will be playing the role of "Dave" and yes, I shall be taking off ALL my clothes on stage.

I have been cast as Dad in Vital Theatre Company's production of The Top Job!

March 8th-April 27th

Saturdays and Sundays at 11 AM and 1 PM

A new musical based on the children's book by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. It's career day at school and all the students have to talk about what their parents do. One little girl worries her father's job isn't impressive enough until they all learn that sometimes the simplest jobs are the most important.

Auditions

I have been wondering if I was going to put audition stuff on the blog, but since the auditions were my first, and a potential source of work (the second) I thought I'd put something up.

The first audition was for the traveling company of 'Jesus Christ Superstar.' How could I resist? Mere days after my arrival in NYC I've got the chance to travel with a beloved musical. As it turns out YOU have just as much chance as I do. I was number 175 out of 180-some folks auditioning. I did glean some good information from the 20-something, fay young men sharing the room with me.

Suffice to say my portion of the audition was a quick in and out. "Thank you, Andrew." Oh well.

The second audition was for a company that does music classes for little kids. I mean LITTLE kids- ages 3 months through 5 years! I did get a call back, so we'll see if I can have more to report.

The whole photographing-of-food thing is interesting. The idea of a “hero” piece of lettuce was brought up today. Every little detail…

That and the spit bucket we have been using to get rid of the food we eat is a reminder of how unusual film life is.

Lights, camera, lights

I am impressed with how much is being done today with the lighting for the shoot. There is a HUGE light outside that pours light through the windows to make extra daylight. Then windows are blacked out or partially blocked and lit to make it night (for the late-night snacking scene).

I think that most of us aren’t aware of how much light is bounced onto subjects on film. Was it Orson Welles that did Citizen Cane with all the crazy light sources and bounced light of the ceiling and stuff? I think so. I’d know better but Lucas Haley has my copy of Citizen Cane.

Hurry up and Wait

I had forgotten how much time is spent on a set waiting. Sometimes, like this morning, first thing I waited in the show, like a piece of set. This is an interesting feeling. Many, many people are bustling around me. In the small bedroom in which the shot was set up there were as many as seven people setting lights or other instruments and getting things ready for me.

Direction to the actor is almost an afterthought. But if I don’t come through it’s all for nothing.

I also get to sit while others are shooting. Lots of sitting. I had internet for a while, but then it’s out again.

There is food everywhere on the shoot. There is a table in the garage filled with goodies of all kinds. On top of that there is a kitchen dedicated to preparing the food product consumed on-camera. Ironically I think the fellow who is playing the “fit guy” has to eat more food than I, the “not fit guy” will.

I have been cast in an info-mercial for a major diet system. I think I read in my contract that I cannot speak disparagingly of the product or company, so I will not name names, but suffice to say it is a SYSTEM for your NUTRITION.

Actually I don’t have anything bad to say about the company or the product, which I have used with some success (and some gas).

I have been cast as “Not Fit Guy.” I have lost over 50 pounds so that I can finally grab the golden ring of “Not Fit Guy!” I think that says something about where I came from and where I still need to go, but that is another blog entirely.
